At Glass Jacobson, we love seeing our clients accomplish all their life goals. In May of 2019, we got to see one of our clients, Maria “Nica” Shields, break the world record for the longest distance run in 12 hours for a woman in her age group.
The previous world record for this event was set in 1989 and stood for over 50 years. But Nica’s distance of 62.276 miles in 12 hours gave her the record she had been trying to beat for the past 3 years.
This time around Nica had to face the challenge of cold and rainy weather, in addition to the race taking place overnight from 7pm to 7am. She gives a lot of credit to her crew, who set out food and drinks for her throughout the race.
Nica has run numerous marathons and other long-distance races since she started distance running in her early 40s. She ran her first 50-mile race at 50 years old and finished in 9 hours and 56 minutes, a national record! Other prior races include runs of 100 miles in 21 hours and 32 minutes (a national record), and various 50-mile records, including one set on Mt. Masochist, which she ran in 12 hours and 1 minute.

Nica shared with us her two drives to run: “fun and breaking records.” She plans to continue to chase more records in the future.
